Alphabet Fun: I is for Insect Color Mixing Butterfly Craft {& Spring Fling Giveaways!}

Last week, as you might remember from seeing what was featured in our new learning center, we centered our preschool learning around the letter I for INSECTS.  So in coming up with an art activity, I was inspired by the awesome Art Class over at Pineapple Paintbrush.  One of her first activities in learning about color was to mix primary color by folding paper, so I just decided to make it relate to our week's theme by making that paper into a butterfly first.  Check it out...

Color Mixing Butterfly Kids Craft

   

 1. Fold construction paper in half.

2. Draw half of butterfly on it.

3. Cut on line through both layers of paper (as if you were making a heart).

4. Unfold to see butterfly.

5. Squirt or drip one of two primary colors (red, blue, or yellow) of paint on each side of fold.

(Sawyer squirted the paint across the fold, which was fine, too.)

6. Fold in half again and rub, squishing paint inside wings but being careful it doesn't squish out the sides.

 7. Unfold and marvel at the mixing of the two paint colors!

8. Let dry.

9. Glue on pipe cleaner body, antennae, and googley eyes.

10. Add clips to secure while glue dries.

11. Show finished Color Mixing Butterfly to daddy over the webcam!
