Simple Science: Oil & Water Color Explosions
Here’s some easy science fun with things you probably already have in your kitchen; water, vegetable oil, and food coloring. We poured some oil into a pitcher or vase half full of room temperature water. The kids learned that oil and water “don’t like each other.” I told them that the oil rises to the top because the water is denser than oil.
Then we put a couple drops of food coloring in and notice how it beaded up in the oil. After a few seconds it exploded beyond the oil down into the water because it is made with water and is therefore also denser than oil.
We threw in a little color theory, too, by using two primary colors and watching them mix in the water. The kids were in awe and asked to do this experiment over and over again. Next time, I want to set it up with some eye droppers so that they can do it themselves.
